  • Sophmore slump? I think so. This is a fair album despire the scathing review from Rolling Stone, but is pales compared to their debut. I hope the come back strong.

  • *I have to disagree with the above statement. Sam's Town is a completely different record than Hot Fuss. As a fan of the Killers, I would say that Sam's Town is a much more solid effort. It isn't as pop and fresh as Hot Fuss but it is a fine rock albulm. Comparatively, Sam's Town is better than many cds released in 06, it's unfortuante for the Killers that so many critics wanted another Hot Fuss. As for the Rolling Stone review, 'scathing' is the correct word. It was really unfair. By no means though is this a slump for the Killers, go see them perform these songs live and you'll understand exactly what I mean. Also, RS hated this cd but so many other music mags and news publications has it on their listing of top 100 albulms of 06. Blender listed it at #25, NME at #12, Megastar listed it at #5, and Q (Britain's version of RS) listed it #5. Not only that, RS didn't list the cd as a top cd, but two songs from it were chosen in their top 100 songs-- this after thier reviewer stated that Sam's Town had only one good song on it-- talk about hypocritcal. Especially since the one song that they quoated as being the one good song, was ranked lower than another song from the cd. No doubt the Killers will come back strong on their 3rd record-- because Sam's Town is telling us that they have so much more to offer than songs about boyfriends who look like girlfriends. Another thing, Sam's Town has only been out 11 weeks and has already sold 2 million copies world wide. Just like Hot Fuss it's a slow burner, critics actually hated Hot Fuss too. I didn't like it at first until I saw them live and then I fell in love with it. That's what many are finding out about Sam's Town, it's a slow burner, but it given a chance on it's own, without it being compared to every other cd and Hot Fuss, it's a beautiful rock cd-- something we have very little of right now. Unless you agree with Billboard and alike and think that Nickleback is as good as it gets.

  • Wow! Only the Killers could end up in the categories for Best Albulm as well as Biggest Sophomore slump. It all depends on who you talk to. Sam's Town has truly divided fans and critics alike, however, what is said in the second review above is true, if people just forget the Rolling Stone review and any other for that matter (good or bad), and just listen to Sam's Town, they will find that it is really a beautiful recording. It has its flaws but all of its flaws are the right ones. Just what you would expect from a solid rock record. Face it, the 80s movement wasn't going to last but so long, and the Killers plan to stick around. They got smart. No matter what MTV says about it, or the radio for that matter, Rock and Roll is here to stay, and The Killers want to stick around as well. Sam's Town shows that they are on the right track. Just look below at the listing for Franz Ferdinan, everyone agrees that it was a good record but it sounded just like their first release, instantly making their second 'not good enough'. The Killers decided to gamble, and some people think they came up short, but I think time will prove they had the winning hand after all.

  • I don't really like the Killers at all there have no talent and they never really will. They shouldn't be in this category because their first album wasn't really a success at all; no one really liked it and it never topped any charts.

  • Whoever wrote the above must have been on another planet when Hot Fuss ended up #7 on the Billboard charts as the longest charting rock record-- don't hate, celebrate. The Killers are awesome!
  • Brandon Flowers may have issues but The Killers are an excellent band. I wasn't a huge fan of Hot Fuss, I thought most of the album except the singles and Jenny Was a Friend of Mine (which is an amazing song), was more filler than it was interesting. I found Sam's Town to be more interesting, musically, and When You Were Young is one of my favorite songs in a while, it doesn't sound like a lot of boring mainstream stuff I've heard lately.

  • This is a good cd. I don't see the hype around it since Green Day already had given us American Idiot. Still, it is great listen. It doesn't qualify as a sophomore slump either since I think this is MCR's 3rd cd.
  • Okay kids. Let's get this right. This is, all together now, MCR's THIRD album. Not olny that but this is a fine album. I'm not sure where AOL got the definition of "slump", but I'm sure it doesn't mean "debuted at number 2 on the album charts." Not a slump.
  • Agreed. I think they choose cds to make everyone debate them out, but for sure this one made no sense, since it isn't their second cd, but their third, and their 2nd was actaully my fav over this one, but still this cd is far from any slump
  • Excellent album, some of MCR's best work.
  • My Chem got a shitload more teen boppy fans so in a way it isnt even near a slump. As a fan since there first album i think its bullshit that they change there image ever fucking album.

  • A couple of great tracks, but all told I don't think this album is as strong end-to-end or as commercial. I know you shouldn't knock an album for not being commercial, but I want my pop music bubble gum flavored. Don't you? Clearly talented guy though.

  • I totally did not like this cd. I just think it was too full of guest artists, although it will probably win cd of the year or something silly like that.

  • I don't think that this album was very good. YES JT can rock the mike on some songs: My Love, Sexyback, Sexy Ladies. But the rest are just fillers and you can tell that they are. Whoever said that he had too many guest artists is screwed: look at Press Play by DIDDY? The whole thing is duets i think that he should ahve changed the name to Duets by Diddy.

  • Yeah, I guess JT, Diddy, and Nelly Furtado, oh...and Akon, and Snoop and Pharrel.....the list goes on. They all play off of each other, it's amusing at first but then the songs all start to sound the same, and that's when it becomes very obvious that the music is lacking.
  • I loath SexyBack more than almost any other song in my entire life. It's right up there with My Humps, which was an offense to the music industry. SexyBack is a pathetic attempt at writing music, it makes me want to jump off a balcony. Anyway, I think it's quite sad that we regard Diddy/Snoop/Akon, etc, as artists. If they were really artists, they wouldn't need help writing what are supposed to be their songs. Anyone can belt out random lyrics that someone else wrote for them, why does anyone praise these "artists" for something any slum can do? How often do rock bands work together? Never, they can write real music on their own.

You Could Have It So Much Better

  • To be clear, this was not a bad album but compared to their 2004 debut, this qualifies as a slump. It's a no-win situation when you come out with a kick-ass intro and follow-up with a similar sounding album. No longer is it the new sound. That said, it's worth a listen just to hear the pounding thump and energy and Alex Kapranos' intoxicating voice.

  • This was not a bad cd at all. Actually it was just like the first in my book, so I don't know what everyone was looking for. If they would have tried something new then they would get berated for it (just look at the Killers and how they are being treated for doing something different).

  • And speaking of the Killers, they made another end of year list for VH1, at #4 for cd of the year....however, they picked Justin Timberlake for #1. Their complete list was suprisingly good better than most, and not as pretencious...I still don't agree with the JT cd as top choice though

  • Is this about his producing a sophomore slump or about his actually being a sophomore in high school? Who is this?
  • His first album was horrible, so this was just expected. This isn't a slump - its a continuous roll down the same hill.
