best 11 albums of the year 11. love is all, 'nine times that same song' -- it's raucous, it's super fun. the chick's voice is awesome. i'm so t-oed i didn't drag my a** to knitting factory that rainy night in nov. to see them.
10. the big sleep, 'son of a tiger' -- i spent new years eve with them last year at mercury lounge, i've seen them 5 times this year. they're that good live. listen to 'you can't touch the untouchable' and tell me it doesn't rock you.
9. cat power, 'the greatest' -- chan marshall. crazy with a touch of nuts? yes. brilliant? yes x2. it's as pretty as the pink implies. hear this live performance now.
8. sonic youth, 'rather ripped' -- i'm not well-versed in the whole sonic youth ... "thing." i wasn't blown away by their live show this summer. but i effing love this album. it's one of my most listened to cds this year. watch videos, get 'ripped.'
7. editors, 'the back room' -- blah blah joy division, interpol blah blah. relax. i think i and the help of their amazing live shows have converted more than 2 people ... just let the moody darkness rush over you. in fact, do it now.
6. wolfmother -- '70s rock nostalgia with no catch. aussie fros, unicorns, alternate universes and a treat to watch live. enjoy!
5. the raconteurs, 'broken boy soldier' -- start to finish a great cd. each member of this indie rock supergroup is clearly represented from benson's perfect pop and jack's bluesy rock sensibilities to the greenhornes' impeccable rhythmic force. as ben stiller said in 'starsky & hutch' "do it."
4. silversun pickups, 'carnavas' -- in a blink of an eye they went from small, sparsely-attended shows to letterman ... where they went OFF. they're quite "smashing" for sure and, oh yeah, adorable. hear them go acoustic.
3. film school, 'film school' -- c'mon, in my top 3?! yes. kim the girl we suspect sucks helium on a daily basis hearts gloom rock and this is my favorite gloom rock album of the year. film school, if you're out there, please get back together sniff ... sniff.
2. the black angels, 'passover' -- how do 21 year olds make such mature, tortured rock a la brian jonestown massacre? step one: grow up in tx under strange circumstances. step two: become obsessed with the velvet underground. the music will move you ... you'll want to hear this.
1. band of horses, 'everything all the time' -- i will be listening to this album for the rest of my life. seriously. their a little mmj and sound exactly like they look.as my little sister said after seeing them in australia this month "there were beards everywhere!" makes me want to reminisce about my (made up) days growing up in the pacific northwest. start to finish, pure, lovely awesomeness.
honorable mentions emily haines & the soft skeleton, 'knives don't have your back' -- the metric chick made a tragic and beautiful album with her pain. warning: don't listen to this if you're like, sad or the lyrics to 'crowd surf off a cliff' will break you.
beck, 'the information' -- all over the place and super accessible in a decidedly not-boring way.
yeah yeah yeahs, 'show your bones' -- it's lovely. which is weird. if 'cheated hearts' and 'turn into you' were teddy bears, their stuffing would be protruding from every seam.
best soundtrack mogwai, 'zidane, a 21 century portrait' -- actually SAW the film, unlike a certain p-fork reviewer. one of my favorite bands does well to magnify the intensity of this soccer great with a penchant for head-butting.
most disappointing album of the year killers, 'sam's town' -- um ... what happened? why couldn't brandon prettyboy flowers keep his mouth shut and make another infectious, pop-glam-rock album like 'hot fuss'? as a friend said, "he sounds like meatloaf drowning." choke!
best live shows film school at mercury lounge in nyc -- the perfect beer buzz combined with guitar fuzz in a dark room with my friends at my favorite venue ... what more could you ever ask for?
the black angels at the knitting factory -- gritty music at the grungy knitting factory. and god i love tambourine.
mogwai at coachella valley music festival -- oh mogwai, how i love you. but you + heinken light (wtf?) beer buzz in the dessert in the dark with lit up palm trees and some harmless making out to a set of my favorite songs = bliss.
art brut at coachella valley music festival -- i didn't know what to expect and ended up laughing hysterically, dancing and rocking out for my last show of the festival. blown away. nonbelievers -- go. see.their.live.show. eddie argos 4eva.
worst live shows franz ferdinand at coachella in ca -- the foot stomping has got to stop. along with the horrible musicianship i witnessed at their undeserved top-slot set. yeah, i took it personally.
annie at mercury lounge in ny -- this might be the worst show i've seen ... ever. a huge "annie" tarp on the wall (yeah, we know who you are ... we BOUGHT tickets), more lasers than a star wars convention and a ridiculously dramatic, insipid performance. did i mention it sucked?
i love you but i've chosen darkness at bowery ballroom -- suffice it to say that seeing their awkward, avert-your-eyes performance ruined an album that would have trumped emily haines' honorable mention spot.
longest-lasting ringtone interpol, 'say hello to the angels'
favorite song of the year band of horses, 'wicked gil' (acoustic version) -- totally freaking haunting and heartbreaking
favorite music video of the year band of horses, 'the great salt lake' -- see! these are the memories i would have had growing up in the pac. nw!
favorite album cover silversun pickups, 'carnavas' -- loved the spacey, dream-like and delicate ... wait, it's quite phallic, isn't it?... cover so much that i stole a poster from mercury lounge ... and then again at bowery ballroom.
top 3 favorite aol sessions wolfmother -- boulders, smoke machine, stars ... it ruled.
all-american rejects -- solidified my adoration of pop-punk and inspired my decision to go public with said affection. "hi my name is kim, and i love pop-punk."
mat kearney -- i did the interview ... so naturally, it's brilliant. kidding.
best musician sighting paul banks -- standing behind me at secret machines. i almost fell over when we locked eyes. do i know how lame i am for adding this? absolutely.
matt costa -- talking on his cell phone at my favorite lunch spot. he is like the definition of "your photo doesn't do you justice." marry me and sing sweet songs to me.
best musician-meeting experiences karen o -- she rammed me with the door to our interface studio. it hurt ... but i was so excited to tell my friends.
chan marshall (aka cat power) -- she asked me if i was a marc jacobs model = best day of life ... and, admittedly, probably helped her standings in my top 11 albums.
favorite tv shows project runway -- heidi's voice is endlessly annoying, but i can't get enough of tim gunn addressing the group "desiiiigggggners" every time he enters the workspace.
america's top chef -- sam, marry me and make me delicious canapes. not necessarily in that order.
iron chef america -- chickpeas have never sounded so deadly or dangerous as when the "chairman" (please) mark dacascos introduces them as the secret ingredient at the beginning of a challenge ... after completing a roundhouse back flip (or something) in a cloud of smoke.
favorite film the prestige -- the departed was brilliant too, but this movie made for more interesting post-theater conversation. plus, christian bale is (spell it out with me) H-O-T.
best purchase my ugly doll -- meet chuck. chuck enjoys cookies, cookie crumbs and cookie dough ice cream.
best karaoke performance ariel, 'part of your world' -- i ROCKED this song twice this year.ariel's got nothing on me ... except of course her "gadgets and gizmos a plenty"
person who so, so needed to be voted off the island tyra banks she .... suuuuuuuuuucks. point #1 point #2 oh yeah, and the game even agrees with me.
favorite viral video squishing grapes -- i'm not kidding, the first time i saw this, i feared i would never recover. tears, difficulty breathing, snorting, you name it ... all at work and for an hour with repeat outbursts for weeks.
most looking forward to in '07 arcade fire's 'neon bible' interpol's new album
